The system of Mat exercises
See how the Mat work is built, so you can teach it as a connected system instead of a list of moves.
Learn to teach one Mat class to many different bodies — without losing a single one of them.
Most Mat classes aren't full of matching students. A client of ten years stands next to someone who joined last month, and you're expected to challenge one without losing the other. This weekend training in Port St. Lucie, Florida is built around that exact problem: teaching a mixed-level Mat class with control, clarity, and confidence.
A Mat sequence looks simple on paper. Teaching it well, to a room where every body is at a different stage, is a different skill entirely. This training is grounded in the same idea that shapes every program at Lucie Lemon Pilates: you teach the person in front of you, not just the exercise on the list.
That means knowing when to hand someone a prop and when to take one away. Knowing which client needs a full progression and which one needs to be pulled back. And doing all of it while keeping the class moving as one cohesive session — not two separate ones happening in the same room.
See how the Mat work is built, so you can teach it as a connected system instead of a list of moves.
Know which prop supports a specific goal for a specific client, rather than reaching for one out of habit.
Adjust the same exercise up or down in real time, so one sequence can serve very different bodies.
Run a single class that meets both ends of the room without watering it down or overwhelming anyone.
Apply what you know about the body to decide what a client needs next — not just what comes next on the sheet.
Give cues that speak to different levels of understanding at once, so newer and experienced clients each hear what they need.
Correct and support one client without stalling the momentum of the group.
Make decisions based on the client in front of you, not a fixed script.
An in-person, in-studio weekend training at our Port St. Lucie studio.
This weekend is built for Pilates instructors and teachers in training who already teach or practice Mat work, and want to get better at running a class where clients aren't all at the same level. It's a fit if:
Not sure whether this weekend or the full Classical Comprehensive Teacher Training is the right starting point? A short conversation with Master Teacher Deb Lemon is the fastest way to find out.
The weekend is led in person by Deb Lemon, Master Teacher at Lucie Lemon Pilates and lead instructor of our Classical Comprehensive Teacher Training program.
Because the training happens live in our studio, you work directly with her throughout — not watching a recording or moving through a workbook alone.
Meet Deb and the studio →You teach the person in front of you, not just the exercise on the list.
This Mixed Level Mat training is focused and self-contained. It's separate from our 500-hour Classical Comprehensive Teacher Training, which covers Mat and all apparatus across three certification levels. If you're weighing a shorter, skill-specific training against the full Comprehensive path, that page walks through the levels, hours, and format in detail.
By Sunday evening you'll have built and adjusted a Mat class in real time. You'll leave with a clearer system for progressing and regressing exercises on the spot, sharper cueing that reaches more than one level at once, and more confidence running a room where not everyone is working at the same intensity.
This training is designed for those already teaching, or actively training to teach, Mat work. If you're unsure whether your experience is the right fit, reach out and we'll talk it through before you register.
No. It's a standalone weekend focused specifically on teaching mixed-level Mat classes — separate from the 500-hour Comprehensive program, though a good complement to it.
In person at our Port St. Lucie, Florida studio. All three days take place live in the studio.
